Core Principles of Ayurveda
Five Elements
Ayurveda suggests that everything in the universe, including the human body, is composed of five basic elements: space, air, fire, water, and earth. These elements combine to form the three doshas, or life forces, known as Vata (space and air), Pitta (fire and water), and Kapha (water and earth).
Doshas
The doshas are central to Ayurvedic medicine, as they are believed to govern physiological activity and are responsible for individual differences in health and disease. Each person has a unique dosha composition, with one dosha usually more dominant than the others. The balance of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha determines one's constitutional type and health status.
Health and Disease
Ayurveda maintains that health is maintained by balancing the doshas and that disease is the result of an imbalance. Factors contributing to such imbalances include diet, lifestyle, stress, and (inner and outer) environmental toxins (to read your environment better).
